Biography

Dr. Bhardwaj has made seminal contributions to human dendritic cell biology, particularly in the areas of their isolation, subset discovery, immunobiology, antigen-presenting function, and the use of vaccine adjuvants in humans. She has developed Toll-like receptor agonist- and dendritic cell-based vaccines for the treatment of both cancer and infectious diseases in several investigator-initiated studies. She has also pioneered neoantigen vaccine research at The Tisch Cancer Institute. Dr. Bhardwaj is dedicated to translating basic science advancements into clinically relevant trials for patients.

Her honors include being named one of Scientific American’s Top 50 (2004), receiving the Frederick W. Alt Award (2015), the Jacobi Medallion from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (2020), and the AAISCR Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research Award (2022). She was the recipient of ESMO’s Immuno-Oncology Award (2022), named a Fellow of the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) in 2023, and honored as Mount Sinai Innovation Partners’ Inventor of the Year (2024). That same year, she was elected to the National Academy of Medicine, and in 2025, she became a Fellow of the AACR Academy.

Beyond her research, Dr. Bhardwaj serves as a senior editor for Cancer Immunology Research and Frontiers in Immunology. She has served on the Board of Directors of the AACR and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Cancer Research Institute (CRI).
