2024 Annual Call for Nominations to Highlight Early Career Scientists Conducting Research within the Mission of the NCI Division of Cancer Prevention

Purpose - The purpose for this call for nominations is to highlight early career scientists who are advancing research within the areas supported by the Division of Cancer Prevention (DCP) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The individuals selected will be featured on the NCI DCP website and social media as well as being invited to present their research to the broad NCI community. The overall goal is to increase visibility and provide recognition to the early career scientists conducting research within the areas supported by DCP.

DCP Scientific Scope - DCP furthers the mission of the National Cancer Institute by leading, supporting, and promoting rigorous, innovative research and training to prevent cancer and its consequences to improve the health of all people. DCP supports research spanning the full translational spectrum, from preclinical (e.g., cell and tissue culture, animal models) to clinical (e.g., small early phase clinical trials to large phase III studies) research focused on the following areas:

  • Cancer Early Detection Biomarker Development and Screening
  • Intervention Development for Cancer Prevention
  • Precision Cancer Prevention
  • Symptom Science and Management

Eligibility for Nomination

  • Conducting research within the areas outlined above. Interdisciplinary research is also welcomed if relevant to the aforementioned areas listed. If you have questions about this, please contact NCIDCPworkforce@mail.nih.gov.
  • Early career defined as Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree holder either currently in a post-degree training position (e.g., postdoctoral fellows, physician-scientists in fellowships or research training positions, research fellows, clinician-scientists in research training positions) or current early career faculty (e.g., assistant professors, instructional program manager, research assistant professors), including those who have not received prior R01-equivalent support or those who have a currently active R01-equivalent award as an early stage investigator (ESI) or new investigator (NI). In general, the nominee should be no more than 12 years beyond their terminal degree and/or are in entry-level positions within their research fields.
  • Must be nominated by an individual with current NIH funding and have a connection to DCP-related research areas.

Nomination Requirements, Process, and Due Date

  • NIH biosketch
  • Abstract summarizing current DCP-related research (no more than 350 words)
  • Letter of support from nominator (no more than 1 page)

The due date is June 30, 2024; submit all materials in one pdf to NCIDCPworkforce@mail.nih.gov.
