Dr. David E Nelson is the Director of the Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program (CPFP) Branch in the National Cancer Institute's Division of Cancer Prevention. The CPFP is an internationally renowned postdoctoral program designed to train early career scientific researchers and leaders in the field of cancer prevention. Dr. Nelson came to the CPFP in 2008 after working at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta for many years.

He has conducted applied research on many topics, including tobacco, alcohol, communication, and survey methodology. He is an author on more than 100 articles in the peer-reviewed scientific literature, and three books related to public health communication. He received his Medical Degree from the Oregon Health Sciences University, and Master's Degrees in Public Health and Communication from the University of Michigan and the University of Delaware, respectively.
