This one-week intense learning session provided specialized instruction in the role of diet and bioactive food components as modifiers of cancer incidence and tumor behavior. The practicum included tours of the new NIH Clinical Research Center and the Metabolic Kitchen at USDA. Some of the cancer prevention topics/activities at the practicum were:
- Cancer Trends
- Bioactive Food Components
- Research Databases
- Ethics & Health-Related Messages
- Pre-Clinical & Clinical Studies
- Hands-On Workshops at NIH Department of Nutrition "Research Day."
Participants were required to complete a database search on a research topic, summarize findings and present information at the end of the practicum. Complete instructions were provided to participants. Some preparation was required prior to practicum.
This practicum was open to registered dietitians and students enrolled in a CADE-accredited supervised practice program at a healthcare facility, community agency, or a foodservice corporation, or combined with undergraduate or graduate studies. Participants must have completed a bachelor's degree at a US regionally accredited university or college.
Graduate students with nutrition related backgrounds were also considered.
