Portrait of Moritz A. Konerding, MD

    Moritz A. Konerding, MD
(Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Rhineland Palatinate, Germany)

Dr. Moritz A. Konerding is Professor of Anatomy at the Institute of Functional and Clinical Anatomy of the University Medical Center of theJohannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany. Dr. Konerding received his degree in 1984 from the University of Essen, where he did his scientific post-doctoral work and specialization in human anatomy, histology and embryology. Carrying on from his thesis on the impact of stochastic vibrations on the vertebral column and their blood supply, he and his group focused on angiogenesis during inflammation, wound healing, and tumor growth, as well as on clinical anatomy. He is an expert on microvascular anatomy and 3D patterns of angiogenesis, and the effects of antiangiogenic agents in blood vessels in different organ and tissue systems. From cooperative research as guest scientist at the Cancer Research Campaign's Mount Vernon Hospital with the late Dr. Julie Denekamp in the UK or the Istituto Mario Negri in Bergamo (Italy) and the University of Brescia (Dr. Marco Presta's lab), several important papers on tumor microvascular architecture emerged. Visits at the Children's Hospital in Boston at Dr. Folkman's lab resulted in insights of the impact of angiogenesis and anti-angiogenesis of the vasa vasorum for the development of atherosclerotic plaques. Since 2003, Dr. Konerding has participated in a multi-disciplinary research group together with the labs of Dr. Mentzer (Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston) and Dr. Tsuda's (Harvard School of Public Health, Boston) studying angiogenesis in a variety of developmental, inflammatory and regenerative models.
