Portrait of Rakesh K. Jain, PhD

    Rakesh K. Jain, PhD
(E.L. Steele Laboratory of Tumor Biology, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital)

Dr. Rakesh Jain is the A.W. Cook Professor of Radiation Oncology (Tumor Biology) at Harvard Medical School and Director of the E.L. Steele Laboratory of Tumor Biology at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He is regarded as a pioneer in tumor biology and in vivo imaging and bioengineering and is widely known for proposing a new principle for cancer treatment—“normalizing vasculature to improve the delivery and efficacy of therapeutics.” For nearly four decades, Dr. Jain has championed the notion that a solid tumor is an organ-like structure and not just a collection of cancer cells. To unravel the complex biology of this organ, he developed an impressive array of innovative technologies and sophisticated animal and mathematical models and applied them in extraordinarily elegant ways. Dr. Jain's research represents a premier example of bench-to-bedside translation in oncology. This tight integration between bench and bedside has provided unprecedented molecular, cellular, anatomical, and functional insights into the tumor microenvironment. His discoveries have fundamentally transformed the thinking of scientists and clinicians about how antiangiogenic agents work in people with cancer and have directly impacted the development and use of new drugs to treat cancer and other diseases. For his multidisciplinary and far-reaching contributions to tumor biology, he has received more than 50 prestigious awards, including the Science of Oncology Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He is a member of all three U.S. National Academies: the National Academy of Science, National Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine, as well as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
