Nutritional Science Senior Scientist

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Cancer Institute (NCI), Division of Cancer Prevention (DCP), Nutritional Science Research Group (NSRG) is seeking a Senior Scientist. The NSRG manages a comprehensive program of grant-supported, basic science research designed to increase the understanding of the role of diet in cancer risk and tumor behavior. The NSRG supports research on the determinants of cancer, including factors that influence personal susceptibility to cancer in humans, such genetic and epigenetic events, hormonal and biological pathways, racial differences and ethnic factors and their interactions with the intake of bioactive food components and insults arising from excess calories, environmental contaminants, microbes, and viruses.

The successful candidate will be expected to serve as a technical and scientific expert in the area of nutrition and the microbiome as it relates to human health and in particular cancer risk. This individual also will be expected to identify on-going implementation needs, develop resources for the scientific community, and identify research gaps and scientific opportunities related to nutrition and cancer prevention and the development of initiatives to address these gaps and opportunities. Additionally, the successful candidate will help foster partnerships within and across federal agencies and with the food/nutraceutical industries.

The work site location is the Washington, D.C. suburb of Rockville, Maryland.

Salary Range

Salary range for this position is $89,033 to $136,771 per year depending upon qualifications and experience. Benefits include health and life insurance options, retirement, paid holidays and vacation leave.

Qualifications

U.S. citizenship is required for all applicants. Candidates must have earned a PhD or equivalent in nutrition science, microbiology, cell or molecular biology or related areas. Successful candidates should have experience in nutrition and the microbiota in preclinical models or humans. Experience in administering grant programs is an asset.
